If they were a separate country they would be in a weaker negotiating position. For example, they couldn't threaten to not collect taxes for the federal government or withhold transfer payments. Quebec has been stronger and received more concessions by not leaving Canada.
Alberta doesn't have to separate from Canada in order to advance economically. All they have to do is to exercise their rights as a province under the constitution. They would be worse off if they separated.
It seems to have worked for Quebec. I believe they've gained more powers than if they had separated from Canada.

I'm not sure how much weaker of a position they can get than:
1. Getting ZERO transfer payments
2. Having LOWER Senate representation
3. Not getting anything they ask from Ottawa
